Hi all

Was wondering if anyone knew of any petitions circulating against the national standards in Auckland?

Also if anyone had any advice on lobbying my local MP Judith Collins?

Perhaps an information evening for parents and concerned me mbers of the public could be held in Auckland to discuss the implications of the NS on our schools and future generations?

Please feel free to offer any feedback about the best way to get a petition started or on lobbying our local MPS.

hi Rachael
We had a petition earlier in the year but that has now been delivered to Parliament. I think given we are heading into election year it might be good to either encourage people to write a brief letter or email to their MP - unless you have thousands and thousands of signatures on a petition it is easy for the Government to ignore them. There have also been some community meetings - we've found the best ones are often ones run by a school for its own parent community
If you want to lobby your MP, there is guidance about generally how to go about it at http://www.nzei.org.nz/Get+Involved/Membership+Networks/Lobby.html
You need to ring her electorate office and make an appointment. I would suggest that you get a small group to go with you, preferably including a/some parents. The main things are (1) decide on 2-3 key things you want to get across and use a couple of real life examples to back up your points (2) leave something in writing with her about your concerns that includes a written request for her to take up the issue and pass on your concerns to the Prime Minister and (3) remember to thank her for her time and attention!
