A view from the UK from a NZ teacher

Here's the perspective of a NZ teacher working in the UK..."If you are passing on information to the Minister or Prime Minister then here is my five cents worth regarding the proposed National Testing. I am currently private tutoring in the UK picking up the pieces so tospeak of the mess the local state school has created from focusing too hard ontheir league tables and not on the individual needs of the children. It breaksmy heart that I am working with two fabulous 10 year olds who need…See More

BULLDOZER APPROACH TO NATIONAL STANDARDS WON’T WORK

NZEI's latest press releaseThe education sector union NZEI Te Riu Roa says the government must recognise that a “bulldozer approach” to the introduction of National Standards will inevitably fail. The new National Standards for literacy and numeracy will be released at the end of October, and schools will then be expected to start working with them when they open their doors for the 2010 school year. That means principals and teachers will have just six weeks, during the busiest time of the year,…See More

DomPost attack on teachers

A number of individual principals' remarks, some of them ironic, about the risks of school league tables - and written in some cases months ago on MoE blogs - have led to a media frenzy this week. The DomPost made a virulent attack on ALL teachers http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/opinion/editorials/2823857/Editorial-Listen-and-learn-teachers yesterday. You can…See More

FUZZY NATIONAL STANDARDS FAIL CONFIDENCE TEST AGAIN

The latest press release from NZEI:

The Government should call “time out” on the National Standards after an ERO report released yesterday showed 63% of teachers had only limited or some understanding of them, the education union representing primary teachers, NZEI Te Riu Roa says.

NZEI President Ian Leckie said the ERO report again confirmed the Standards were “fuzzy” and unreliable.

“The low level of understanding reflects…

Who's really showing leadership here?

A courageous letter to the Minister from an Auckland principal:

Greetings

I am professionally and personally insulted by your remarks as quoted in the

NZ Herald this morning and wish to issue you a challenge and invitation to

stand by your comment and prove its validity. If you are a politician with

integrity I trust you will accept my…

NZ Principals Federation votes "no confidence" in National Standards - and teachers agree!

700 principals from around the country last weekend voted "no confidence" in National Standards.  The Minister's response:  don't vote for National. Rather than address the professional and ethical concerns professional leaders have, Anne Tolley just politicises the whole debate.  Meanwhile, NZEI has done a survey of teachers in primary schools around the country. More than 70% of staffrooms responding were at "boiling" or "warming up" temperatures in their reaction to the Standards.  And…
