Ministry suggests schools fudge Standards Information

So now the MInistry suggest schools make it up!!  Worryingly, I was at a school meeting last night where some parents also seemed to think this might be an acceptable way forward...  When a school says it's teaching kids to become active researchers, ethical citizens, enquiring thinkers etc, isn't there a bit of a double standard in our Ministry saying we should basically lie about data??? …See More

Before you get pregnant make sure you have the right genetic IQ for a child

Here's a letter sent to the DomPost from an NZEI member: Intelligence is something which gets measured and the researchers can tell in early childhood, the children with clever and adaptable ways of thought from the children not so gifted. With parent/teachers meetings having been held recently there have been teachers who had to tell whole class sets of parents that their children are below National Educational Standards. It is done with sadness on the part of teachers for it is very clear…See More

800 signatures in one day in Wanganui.... Minister "on the defensive" in Christchurch...

A big week this last week for the bus tour, but a very productive one. On "my" leg from New Plymouth south to Wanganui, we had 40 people at a community forum in New Plymouth, another 40 in Waitara, and 70 in Wanganui...parents, ECE teachers, retired folk, principals and teachers...great conversations and lots of support for the message that a trial of the Standards is needed. This was also mirrored in the number of signatures we got in Wanganui on our petition in just one day - more than 500 in…See More

THREE buses on the road this week...

I arrived in New Plymouth last night to meet the bus to the sun setting behind Back Beach, the mountain looking like a two-dimensional Michael Smither painting, and the aroma of silage in the air...this week we're off to schools around Taranaki and Wanganui, with another bus in Whakatane/Rotorua/Taupo and yet another one hitting Christchurch! So while we're getting nearer to the "last stop" at Parliament on March 31st, the bus tour certainly isn't losing any of its intensity!See More

From deepest Ponsonby to way out West... the NZEI bus hits Auckland!

The NZEI bus has spent the last week in Auckland, and the reception has been pretty amazing. I think I must have succumbed to the Wellington belief that everyone north of the Bombays has somehow lost their judgement in the search of the perfect mansion by the sea.... and that therefore, people wouldn't care about National Standards.... but in fact, we have had a very strong and supportive welcome from parents and schools all over the Auckland region who have backed the call for a trial and…See More
