I remember being told by my teacher that I was below average in my comprehension of text as a student during the 80's. What did it do for me? Made me think I was stupid. What action was taken? None (that I was aware of anyway), yet, I was quite able visually. Those tests were designed (as I am sure the new standards are) to test 'superficial' knowledge, that require a set of knowledge and skills more likely to be possessed by children from a privileged background, as opposed to testing the knowledge of those who are 'actively' engaged in their learning.
